The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award equips young people for life. It is the world’s leading youth achievement award. In 2015 more than 1.1 million young people around the world took part in the Award in over 140 countries and territories. Since the Award’s launch 60 years ago, it has inspired millions of young people to transform their lives.
By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development outside the classroom. It also allows their achievement to be consistently recognised worldwide, giving young people unique international accreditation oft heir experiences.
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is transforming individuals, communities and societies around the world. Young people who do the Award become more confident and resilient, and develop skills in areas such as communication, problem solving and leadership. This in turn impacts on their communities, who see improvements in areas including employability, health and wellbeing, and educational attainment.
What is involved in the award?
The Award is a personal challenge, it involves four sections; service, physical recreation, skills and the adventurous journey. It encourages young students to design their own programme of activities, to recognise their limits, set their own goals and decide what they want to achieve.
The award is broken down into three levels; bronze, silver and gold.
Bronze - over 14 years old with 6 months minimum participation.
Silver - over 15 years old with 12 months minimum participation.
Gold - over 16 years old with 18 months minimum participation.
The four sections of the Award:
Service
Students make a contribution to the local community by volunteering to make a positive contribution to society.
Physical Recreation
Students aim to improve their physical health and wellbeing, with a focus on fitness and performance.
Skills
Students decide to deepen or broaden their abilities and talents, improve confidence and employability.
Adventurous Journey
The great outdoors has so much to offer, students get the chance to develop a deeper understanding of different environments and gain a spirit of adventure.
Residential Project (At gold only)
Participants get an experience of staying in a different environment with other youngsters, to develop a worthwhile project whilst building relationships.
